Inequality
Averages hide differences. Here is the inequality within each country: in health, education and income, between rich and poor and between women and men.
How much development is lost
The UNDP also calculates an inequality-adjusted HDI, which takes into account how health, education and income are distributed among the population. With perfect equality the two values would coincide: the further apart they are, the more inequality.

Income: the Gini index
The Gini index measures how unequally income (or, in many countries, consumption) is shared among people: 0 if everyone has the same, 100 if one person has everything. It is calculated from household surveys, which are not carried out every year: that is why each country has the year of its latest figure, and some have none.
Extreme poverty
Since June 2025 the World Bank counts as extremely poor those living on less than $3 a day at 2021 purchasing power parity (before, the line was $2.15 at 2017 prices). Like the Gini index, it comes from household surveys: each country has the year of its latest figure.
Women and men
The UNDP’s Gender Inequality Index measures women’s disadvantage in three areas: reproductive health (maternal mortality, adolescent births), empowerment (seats in parliament, secondary education) and the labour market (labour force participation). It goes from 0, women and men equal, to 1.
The Gender Development Index compares the HDI of women with that of men: 1 means parity, below 1 women have a lower HDI, above 1 a higher one.
