Migration
Every year millions of people leave their country: for work, to study, to join their family, or to flee war and persecution. Choose a country to see who arrives, who leaves and how much the money sent home matters.
The words
- Emigration
- Leaving your country to live in another. Whoever leaves is an emigrant.
- Immigration
- Arriving in a country to live there. Whoever arrives is an immigrant.
- Net migration
- Those who arrive minus those who leave in a year, per 1,000 people. Positive: more people arrive than leave; negative: more leave.
- International migrant
- Someone living in a country other than the one where they were born (or of which they are a citizen), for any reason.
- Refugee
- Someone who had to leave their country because of war or persecution and cannot return safely. Protected by the 1951 Geneva Convention.
- Remittances
- The money people working abroad send to their family in their home country.
A country in figures
Net migration: UN, World Population Prospects 2024. Migrants: UN estimates (UN DESA) published by the World Bank; refugees: UNHCR; remittances: World Bank. In brackets the year of the figure.
Net migration from 1950 to 2100
Above the zero line more people arrive than leave, below it more leave. After 2023 it is the UN projection.
Net migration per 1,000 people: UN, World Population Prospects 2024 (medium scenario). One-year peaks are often wars or crises.
Where they go, where they come from
How many people born in the country live in another country, and where (emigrants); how many people born abroad live in the country, and where they come from (immigrants). These are not one year’s arrivals, but all the people who in that year live outside the country where they were born.
People born in one country living in another, at mid-year: UN DESA, International Migrant Stock 2024, for 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2020 and 2024. For each country the top 20 countries; «Other countries» is the rest of the total.
